    Kids Program

Our annual Kids Ski Program at RLNC was expanded and more fun than ever this year! Over 60 kids ages 4-12 participated. Thank you volunteer trainers, program coordinators, instructors, helpers and parents who made it happen. A very special thanks to Amy Moore, Elise Fouts and Marci Dye for coordinating and bringing everything up a notch…you are SO organized, SO relaxed, and SO appreciated!  It is nice to see happy kids skiing ’til they drop out there every weekend now.
The RLNC Race Team competed at Soldier Hollow, UT, & Jackson, WY, to finish their High Plains League season. Eric and Rita did well, nearly qualifying for Junior Nationals. Keep up the good work and enjoy the rest of your ski season!

    Nordic News

Winter weather finally arrived and gave us a base to ski on at RL Nordic Center. Groomers were very busy trying to find the trails in about 14″ of new snow; then it got warm and easy to get stuck (pardon our ugly trenches). Trails are now better than ever, so plan to partake. Thanks groomers!

    HS Key Club Dinner

Thank you Key Club for donating $400 to BRTA from your Senior Night Italian dinner!  Good luck with all your worthy community and school projects.

    New Trails Projects

Mark your calendars and plan to participate in building the Forest Service’s Palisades-to-Fox trail:  volunteer work day June 8.

Besides the exciting new Forest Service trail, Red Lodge can also look forward to a new link trail behind the hospital. Grant writers landed $24,000 in Recreational Trails Program funds for this project on private land. Congratulations Beartooth Billings Clinic & Hospital!

    Back Country Film Festival

Get ready. Get excited. Our 6th annual fundraiser, March 1, 7:00 at the ROMAN THEATER! We are chompin’ to use the Roman to present Winter Wildlands Alliance’s movies of the human powered experience to entertain you and get jacked about winter. Expect the usual outstanding raffle items, RL Ales beer & snacks for sale, and 7 quality films by grass roots producers (90 min. total). You will see a sits-skier in the backcountry; an eloquent 11 year old environmentalist; skiing and boarding in Japan, South America, on Denali;  XC ski “race” across Alaska, and more.   $7 adults; $5 children (all tickets at the door).  Hey, this is Winter Carnival weekend.

    Grant’s Tip:

    ski tip

Ski somewhere else! Getting cabin fever? Anxious to see if the snow is whiter on the other side of the fence? Take a winter road trip and bring your XC skis. Montana has lots of unique and wonderful XC ski areas, including some in the city limits. We recently visited the wintry, forested groomed trails at Essex (out of the way but highly recommended). There are backcountry trails and the beautiful mountains of nearby Glacier NP and the Flathead NF.

We also stopped at Homestake Lodge on Homestake Pass (exit 233 off I-90), 5 miles east of Butte. At over 6,000′ elevation on the Continental Divide, these 37 km of groomed trails stay snowy. About 10 km are dog friendly. Trails wind around several little drainages and open meadows. Cabins, a yurt and a lodge are available for overnight stays. Trail fee is $15. [www.homestakelodge.com 406-585-8052].

Check out ungroomed trails near Red Lodge:  The West Fork area received lots of snow in the recent storms and trails and roads there are skiing great. The Lake Fork and Main Fork areas did not receive these snows, so are better for snowshoeing unless you like a serious ski challenge.
